Mazda3 safety has come on a long way. With six airbags as standard, electronic stability control across the range, and the availability of a rear-view blindspot warning system, the Mazda3 is a very safe car. it also activates the hazard warning lights during an emergency stop, cancelling them again when the brake is released. Its no surprise then, that it was awarded the maximum five star rating for crash safety by Euro NCAP with a high score for child safety. The Mazda3s boot space is fairly modest for a car in this class at 340 litres - thats around the same as the Volkswagen Golf but far less than the Honda Civic. The rear seats split and fold down 60/40, which increases the load area to 1,360 litres. Up front, the glove compartment is surprisingly deep and there is also storage space in the central front arm rest.The Mazda3 feels rather more upmarket inside than the previous version thanks to more soft-touch plastics, while the dramatic curve along the top of the dashboard gives the impression of the interior focussing on the driver. The drivers seat has height adjustment and lumbar support on all models, while the steering also adjusts for reach and height. The wide pillars near the rear windows create something of a blindspot, but the Mazda3 is available with a rear-view monitoring system which warns of approaching traffic. Most impressive is the ride quality though, which irons out rough surfaces with minimal fuss, making it great for long distance travel.
